The Hay'o'Trail Race

The Hay'o'Trail Race is a multi-terrain running event organized by Derwent Athletic Club in Cockermouth. The main course covers a distance of 6 km (approximately 3 miles) and takes participants up a local hill. The route offers views of the Lake District and the Solway Coast. This race includes a specific timed segment to determine the first male and female participants to reach the summit of the hill.

The event features distances for various age groups:

  • 6 km senior race for participants aged 15 and over.
  • 1.5 km junior race for the U14 and U16 age categories.
  • 1 km junior race for the U10 and U12 age categories.

Registration and the event base are located at Cockermouth School. All races use electronic chip timing to record participant results. Finishers in the junior categories receive medals, with prizes awarded to the first male and female in each age group.

The terrain and elevation make the course unsuitable for wheelchairs. Because the highest point of the route is exposed to the weather, appropriate footwear for multi-terrain conditions and warm clothing layers are recommended. Limited parking is available at the school, with alternative parking located on nearby public roads. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
