Handsworth Hobble

The Handsworth Hobble is an annual evening trail race organised by Handsworth Roadhogs Running Club. First held in 2013 as an invitation event, it is now run publicly with a trail race permit authorised by UK Athletics. The race typically attracts around 150 runners in good weather and is scheduled each June.

The course uses a two lap route through Shirtcliffe Woods that the club has used for its inter-club winter cross country leg since the late 1980s. The two laps total 5.25 miles / 8.5 kilometres and are entirely off road, so runners often choose trail or spike shoes. The hills affect underfoot difficulty; the climb on the second lap from the stream crossing near Beaver Hill Road up to the finish in the field behind Handsworth Church is noted as particularly demanding. Marshals are provided on the course.

Entries are made in advance via an online entry link and there are no entries on the night. Fees are listed as £6 for UKA affiliated runners and £8 for unaffiliated runners. The event base is normally the Old Crown pub, close to the start and finish, and Shirtcliffe Woods is managed by Sheffield City Council’s Countryside Service and a local Friends group.
