Event Details

The Hamsterley Canicross is a winter trail running event held in Hamsterley Forest in County Durham. The event takes place in February. Participants run with their dogs on a marked course using forest trails and footpaths. Distances include a 10 km and a Half Marathon. The maximum number of entrants is 70.

Location & Course

The event is held within Hamsterley Forest, which covers 4900 acres. The route starts and finishes at the main visitor centre car park. It follows well-marked forest trails and woodland tracks, which can be undulating and include technical surfaces and potential tripping hazards. The forest is known for wildlife such as deer, badgers, and squirrels.

Facilities & Safety

A race HQ with toilets is provided. There is ample car parking with discounted charges, and car sharing is encouraged. On-site canine and human first aiders and emergency veterinary provisions are available. A mandatory kit list for cold weather is required, which is communicated before the event. All dogs must run in a suitable harness attached to a bungee line and waist belt.

Awards & Photos

Awards are given to the first, second, and third-place male and female finishers. All finishers receive an award. Official event photographs are provided free of charge.

Eligibility & Entries

Human entrants must be at least 16 years old on the date of the event. Dogs must be between 1 and 1.5 years old. Entries are non-refundable but may be transferred to a later event if a deferral request is made before the entry cut-off date. Online entries close in mid-February.
