Grindleford Gallop
The Grindleford Gallop is an annual event in the Peak District that covers a distance of 34 km (approximately 21 miles) with a total ascent of 825 meters (3000 feet). The course connects several villages in the White Peak area, including Grindleford, Froggatt, Eyam, Great Longstone, Edensor, and Baslow. Participants travel through a variety of terrain such as local paths, tracks, and open moorland.
The route passes through several landmarks, including the Riley Graves, Longstone Moor, the Monsal Trail, and the Chatsworth Park estate. The final section of the course follows the gritstone edges of Baslow, Curbar, and Froggatt, providing views of the surrounding landscape.
The event is organized by volunteers to raise funds for Grindleford Primary School, with further donations made to the local Pre School, Mountain Rescue, the National Trust, and the Peak District National Park. It is known for its selection of cake provided during the event.
The course is a fixed route rather than a navigational challenge, and the use of GPS devices or route maps is permitted. While important interchanges and control points are marshalled or manned, other sections are only partially marked due to landowner requirements. There is a minimum age requirement of 16 years for all participants. The event provides a variety of starting windows based on estimated finish times to manage flow through the checkpoints.
