The Grand Traverse Mountain Run

The Grand Traverse Mountain Run is a point-to-point ultramarathon from Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado, held on September 5, 2026. The course follows the route of the Grand Traverse Backcountry Ski race and crosses the Elk Mountains for 40 miles with over 6,000' of elevation gain. The event is operated as a fundraising race for Crested Butte Nordic, a 501(c)(3) recreational non-profit.

The run includes five aid stations and drop bag service at Taylor Pass (mile 23.5) and at the finish in Ajax Park, Aspen. On-course nutrition includes water, electrolyte products (Gnarly Hydrate and Fuel20), Honey Stinger gels, chews and waffles, soda, salty and sweet snacks, fresh fruit, pickles, and selected hot items at Taylor Pass.

Participants must carry mandatory gear: a waterproof windshield with hood, a hat or buff, and gloves. A Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue card or a current Colorado hunting or fishing license is required and must be shown at bib pick-up. Tracking via MAProgress is mandatory for safety. Cut-off times are enforced and the race provides a traditional waitlist; entry refunds and transfers are not permitted. The event offers post-race shuttles and bike transport options and awards cash prizes to podium finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
