The Grand Traverse Mountain Run
The Grand Traverse Mountain Run is a point-to-point ultramarathon from Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado, held on September 5, 2026. The course follows the route of the Grand Traverse backcountry ski race and covers 40 miles across the Elk Mountains with more than 6,000 feet of elevation gain. The event is a fundraising race operated by Crested Butte Nordic, a 501(c)(3) recreational non-profit.
Course, support, and race policies
The race crosses high alpine terrain and includes five aid stations. Drop bags are available at Taylor Pass (mile 23.5) and at the finish. On-course nutrition includes Gnarly Hydrate and Fuel20, Honey Stinger gels, energy chews and waffles, soda, salty and sweet snacks, fresh fruit, and additional items at Taylor Pass such as cheese quesadillas and mini salted potatoes. A post-race shuttle from Aspen back to Crested Butte and bike transport for dual sport athletes are offered; spots are limited and are bookable during registration.
Mandatory items for runners include a waterproof windshield with hood, hat or buff, gloves, and a Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue card or a current Colorado hunting or fishing license, with proof required at bib pick-up. Tracking is mandatory through MAProgress and cut-off times are strictly enforced. The race does not allow refunds or transfers; a traditional waitlist is used when the field is full. Priority registration for the Triple Crown opens November 17 and general registration opens December 1. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
