The Grand Traverse Mountain Run

The Grand Traverse Mountain Run is a point-to-point ultramarathon from Mt. Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado. The 2026 edition takes place on September 5, 2026. The course follows the route of the Grand Traverse backcountry ski race and covers 40 miles with more than 6,000' of elevation gain across the Elk Mountains. The event is run as a fundraising race for Crested Butte Nordic, a 501(c)(3) recreational non-profit.

The route crosses high alpine terrain and can include sections run in low light. There are five aid stations on course. Drop bags are available at the Taylor Pass aid station (mile 23.5) and at the finish line. Full and limited aid station supplies include water, electrolyte products, Honey Stinger items, snacks, fresh fruit, and specific items at Taylor Pass such as cheese quesadillas and mini salted potatoes.

Logistics, rules, and support

Runners must carry mandatory gear: a waterproof windshield with hood, a hat or buff, and gloves. All participants must show a Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue (CORSAR) card or a current Colorado hunting or fishing license at bib pick-up. The organizer does not offer race-entry refunds or transfers between participants, and a traditional waitlist is used when the race fills. Racer protection is recommended at registration.

Shuttle service and bike transport are offered for post-race logistics and are available to purchase during registration. The event allocates up to five competitive entries per gender in the trail run and mountain bike events. Prize money for 2025 podium finishers was listed as $1,000 for first, $700 for second, and $400 for third, with additional product awards for other finishers.
