The Grand Traverse Mountain Run

The Grand Traverse Mountain Run is a point-to-point ultramarathon that connects Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado. The route traverses the Elk Mountains, following the same path used for the Grand Traverse Backcountry Ski race. Participants cover a total distance of 40 miles with an elevation gain exceeding 6,000 feet.

The event is organized as a fundraiser for Crested Butte Nordic, a non-profit recreational organization. The high-alpine course reaches significant elevations, and participants are expected to have an understanding of the route as sections may be covered in darkness. For safety and tracking purposes, the use of MAProgress is mandatory for all runners.

Available distances and categories:

  • 40 miles (Individual ultramarathon from Town Park in Crested Butte to Ajax Park in Aspen)

Participants must carry specific mandatory gear at all times, including a waterproof windshield with a hood, a hat or buff, and gloves. Additionally, every runner must possess a Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue (CORSAR) card or a valid Colorado hunting/fishing license to participate.

The course features five aid stations providing hydration and nutrition such as electrolytes, gels, energy chews, fruit, and salty snacks. Special items like cheese quesadillas and potatoes are available at the Taylor Pass station. A post-race shuttle service from Aspen back to Crested Butte is available for booking during the registration process. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
