Grand Traverse Mountain Run

The Grand Traverse Mountain Run is a 40 mile point to point ultramarathon from Crested Butte to Aspen, Colorado, following the route of the Grand Traverse backcountry ski race. The course crosses the Elk Mountains and includes over 6,000 feet of elevation gain, with alpine terrain that may require long periods out on trail and sections run in low light.

The event is organized as a fundraising race for Crested Butte Nordic, a 501(c)(3) recreational nonprofit. Organizers operate a traditional waitlist and do not offer race entry refunds or transfers between participants. Racer Protection insurance is available at registration to cover a registration purchase in case an athlete cannot attend.

Runners must carry mandatory gear including a waterproof windshield with hood, a hat or buff, gloves, and a tracking device. A Colorado Outdoor Search and Rescue card or a current Colorado hunting or fishing license is required and proof must be shown at bib pick up. Tracking is mandatory for safety and will be implemented for the Run and Bike events.

There are five aid stations on the run course. Drop bags are available at Taylor Pass, mile 23.5, and at the finish. Gnarly Sports Nutrition supplies Gnarly Hydrate and Fuel20 on course; aid stations offer water, electrolytes, energy gels and chews, fruit and snacks, and specific items such as cheese quesadillas and mini salted potatoes at Taylor Pass.

The race includes a prize purse for overall podium finishers and allocates competitive entries for elite athletes in the Trail Run and Mountain Bike events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
