Formartine & Buchan Railway 12&6hr Ultra

The Formartine & Buchan Railway 12&6hr Ultra is an endurance running event held on the historic railway line between Maud station and Auchnagatt village hall. Participants attempt to cover as much distance as possible within their chosen time limit. The primary route between Maud and Auchnagatt is estimated at 4.3 miles.

The event features two timed categories:

  • 12 Hour
  • 6 Hour

The course utilizes a lap system where runners travel back and forth between the two locations. To qualify for a finisher medal and goodie bag, participants in the 12-hour event must achieve a minimum distance of 26.3 miles. This typically requires completing several full laps, and mini short laps are made available toward the end of the race to help runners maximize their final distance. Only completed mini laps are added to the total score.

The event is held under Scottish Athletics rules, and participants must be 20 years or older on the day of the race. While there is no strict qualification requirement, having previously completed a marathon is preferred. The event start is located at the Maud Railway Museum. Runners are permitted to have a support crew, and these crews can provide assistance at either end of the course. Prizes are awarded across various categories, including Senior and Veteran age groups for both male and female runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
