Exterminator Fell Race - Totley AC
The Exterminator is the final race in the Totley AC five-race series. It covers approximately 17 miles (about 27 km) with around 1,066 m of total climb and is classified as an FRA category B Long BL race. The race starts and finishes at the Totley AC pavilion at the top of the field behind the Cricket Inn, postcode S17 3AZ.
The route is varied and includes road, track and footpath through woodland, fields, open moorland, villages and hamlets. The course is unmarked, partially marshalled and offers several route choices, so self-navigation and familiarity with the route are important. No GPX routes are provided and use of GPS for navigation is prohibited.
There are multiple checkpoints, including two specific clip/punch checkpoints that all competitors must visit and record; failure to visit and punch these checkpoints will result in disqualification. There are two water stations on course but no single use cups are provided, so runners should carry their own cup or bottle.
FRA Best Practice kit is mandatory and will be checked. Required items include a waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, a physical map of the route, navigational compass, whistle and emergency food. Mandatory kit inspections will be performed before and may be repeated after the race. Numbers must be clearly visible on the chest at the start, at checkpoints and at the finish. Dogs are not permitted on the course.
Toilets, showers and changing rooms are available free on race day but there are no secure storage facilities. Parking near the start is limited and available on a first come basis; parking is not permitted on Penny Lane, Lane Head Road, Moss Road or Strawberry Lea Lane. Public transport is possible, with the 97 bus to Totley stopping about a five minute walk from the pavilion.
