Essex Winter Midweek Series No7 : Chelmsford

This is a midweek night street orienteering event in Chelmsford, forming part of the Essex Winter Midweek Series 2025/26. The event uses MapRun for electronic timing and navigation; competitors may use a smartphone or a Garmin watch. Printed maps are provided on waterproof paper and have more detailed footpath information than the electronic version. Controls are sited on fire hydrants.

Course, scoring and practical information

The event is a line event with two courses, Long and Short. Course distances are measured as direct (straight-line) distances between controls, so participants will run further than the map measurement. The course terrain includes roads, footpaths, some well-lit alleyways and, for the Long course, public parks which may be less well lit. Where routes cross 40 mph roads there will be compulsory crossing points through subways.

Points are awarded using an age/gender handicap system; the best six results from the ten-event series count for the league leaderboard. Missed or incorrect controls incur a five minute penalty. A penalty applies for Anytime catch-up runs and there is a points bonus for running on the night compared with Anytime. Entry fees are stated by category: Senior and Junior/Student, with a higher fee for unaffiliated seniors. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. A head or hand torch is compulsory. Toilets and pub facilities are available at the event base. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
