Essex Winter Midweek Series No7 Chelmsford

Essex Winter Midweek Series No7 in Chelmsford is a night street orienteering event held on Wednesday 21st January as part of the 2025/26 series. The event uses MapRun for electronic timing and offers two course options:

  • Long 7.3 km
  • Short 4.0 km

The event is a line orienteering format; courses are measured as direct distances between controls so competitors will run further than the stated distances. Controls are located on fire hydrants. An open orienteering map printed on waterproof paper will be supplied; the printed map includes more detail than the electronic version. Some sections run on roads, footpaths, well lit alleyways and through public parks. Where routes cross a 40 mph road, compulsory subway crossing points are shown on the paper map.

MapRun details: runners are encouraged to download the course before arrival. The courses appear in the Essex -> Chelmsford folder as South Chelmsford Jan26 SHORT and South Chelmsford Jan26 LONG. The mobile map will not be visible until a PIN issued at registration is entered, though Garmin watches can be used without the PIN. If the app fails, competitors should note the lower number on the H sign or lamp post.

Scoring contributes to the Essex Mid-Week Winter O League. Points are adjusted by an age and gender handicap; best six results from ten events count. On-the-night runners receive a 15 point bonus and an Anytime catch-up period on MapRun is normally available for two weeks with a 7 minute penalty. Each missed or incorrect control incurs a 5 minute penalty.

Entry fees are Senior £4.00 or £5.00 and Junior/Student £2.00; juniors are under 21 on 31 December and higher fees apply to unaffiliated runners. Parking is not available at the pub; free parking is available on nearby Moulsham Street and limited free Tesco parking a short walk away. Toilets and food are available at The Rising Sun pub. Participation is at the competitor’s own risk. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. A head or hand torch is compulsory and high visibility clothing is strongly recommended.
