About the race
Eastern States 100 is a 100 mile trail ultramarathon around Pine Creek in north-central Pennsylvania, held near Waterville, PA (4205 Little Pine Creek Road). The course covers roughly 103 rocky miles with more than 20,000 feet of elevation gain and a historical average finish rate near 49 percent. The route uses long-distance footpaths and connector trails including the Mid State Trail, Black Forest Trail, West Rim Trail, Donut Hole Trail, T-Squared Trail, Long Branch Trail, and the Tiadaghton Trail.
Terrain includes single track, old logging roads, abandoned stone quarries, steep climbs and rocky descents. Runners pass small settlements such as Ramsey and Blackwell and public areas including Hyner Run State Park and Slate Run. Wildlife sightings reported include deer, bear, bald eagles, and rattlesnakes.
The race provides well stocked official aid stations and permits drop bags. Runners are classified as Supported or Unsupported. Supported runners may use crew-accessible aid stations and approved pacers. Unsupported runners may not use crews or pacers; they must rely on official aid stations and their own drop bags.
Unsupported finishers receive a small memento and are not published in the overall awards. The event enforces a minimum qualification: completion of at least one advertised 50K trail race within the official cutoff between January 1, 2025 and the registration date, with publicly available results. Timed events, FKTs, OCRs, and most multisport events do not qualify. Limited date flexibility may be granted for specific life circumstances.
