Boulder Beast

Boulder Beast is an annual trail running event scheduled for September 19, 2026 at Bald Eagle Mountain, Lock Haven, PA. The main course is listed at about 24 miles with approximately 6,000 feet of vertical gain and includes an extended boulder field section.

The route uses named trails such as Goat Path, Lightning Ridge, Gut Check, Black Diamond, Crossover, Fleming Way, Chestnut Flats, and the Gorge Trail. A shorter 25K distance is offered that still covers the boulder field and reaches the Rote Overlook before returning to the finish.

Distances:

• 24 miles - about 6,000 feet vertical gain
• 25K - includes the boulder field and Rote Overlook

The start and finish take place at the Castanea Township Fire Company picnic grounds. There is free parking and ample camping space without reservations. Organizers run a Friday evening pre-race gathering with bag pick-up and a post-race picnic with food and beverage.

The event has strict cut-off times at several aid stations, for example the bottom of the boulder field at mile 6.5 (10:30am) and aid stations at miles 8, 11, 16, and 21 with specified cut-off times. For the 25K, runners must reach the bottom of the boulder field by 10:30am or be removed from the course. Registration opens December 2025 and is limited to the first 600 entrants or the September 1 deadline. No refunds, bib transfers, deferments, or unofficial entries are permitted.
