DalesRunner 40km

The DalesRunner 40 is a roughly 42 km trail race in Swaledale and Wensleydale based at The Dales Bike Centre, Fremington, North Yorkshire. The route uses moorland tracks, hard packed footpaths, grassy pasture and some short road sections, with a few boggy stretches where trail shoes are recommended.

The course passes a number of local features and villages including Grinton, Maiden Castle Iron Age Hill Fort, Whitaside Moor, Dent's Houses, the Bolton Estate and Carperby, then returns via Castle Bolton and the Heights of Greets to the finish area. The Wensleydale Loop is unmarked and competitors must self-navigate that section; competitors will receive a GPX trace and a tracker.

There is a cut off at the first visit to Dent's Houses (around 7.5 miles); runners who do not reach that point in the required time will be diverted onto the short-course option (Harkerside Hustle) and complete the half marathon distance instead. An early start option is available for entrants who expect to take longer than 6.5 hours.

Mandatory kit includes taped-seam waterproof jacket and trousers, hat or buff, gloves, emergency blanket or bivvy, cup or soft flask, 500 ml water, emergency food and a charged mobile phone. Aid stations supply water, sweet and savoury food and limited electrolytes; Green Haw Hut will offer sweets only. Toilets are at the Dales Bike Centre and Carperby Village Hall.
