Course and support

The route begins at Grinton with a short road section then moves onto moorland tracks. The course passes Maiden Castle Iron Age Hill Fort, ascends Whitaside Moor, follows Apedale Road to Dent’s Houses, and continues south into the Wensleydale section via the Bolton Estate and Carperby Moor. It descends via Oxclose Road under Ponderledge Scar to Carperby, crosses footpaths through West Bolton to Castle Bolton, returns to Dent’s Houses, climbs to the Height of Greets, and drops back to Grinton Smelt Mill before finishing at The Dales Bike Centre.

Surfaces include hard packed footpaths and tracks, moorland trods, grassy pasture and some short road sections; trail shoes are recommended. The route will be marked when shared with the Harkerside Hustle. Road crossings are marshalled. There is one cutoff at the first visit to Dent’s Houses (roughly 7.5 miles); competitors who miss this cutoff will be redirected onto the Harkerside Hustle short course and complete the half marathon distance. Aid stations are fully stocked, with vegan and gluten free options. A hot soup and roll is included in the entry; hot drinks and cakes are available for purchase. Car parking is available.
