Dalby's Inferno

Dalby's Inferno is a backyard-style ultra marathon located in Dalby Forest. The event is entering its sixth year and raises funds for the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team. The race follows a 5.5 km trail loop through the forest that is described as not-exactly-flat.

The competition follows a specific format where participants start a new lap every hour for ten hours. Runners have one hour to complete each 5.5 km lap. Those who finish within the hour may start the next lap on the following hour. Participants who do not finish a lap within the time limit must sit out the subsequent lap, though they are permitted to restart on any following lap up to the ninth one. Access to the tenth and final lap is reserved exclusively for those who have successfully completed all nine previous laps.

Completing all ten laps results in a total distance of 55 km, achieving an ultra marathon distance. The event includes several features for participants:

  • 55 km (Total distance over 10 laps)
  • 5.5 km (Single lap distance)

The entry fee covers vehicle access to Dalby Forest and two nights of camping on Friday and Saturday at Adderstone, which is situated approximately 100 meters from the start and finish line. The campsite provides fresh water and toilets, though no showers are available. There is hard standing provided for campervans.

Participants have access to an area at the start and finish line to rest and refuel between laps, where small shelters are permitted. Hot food and drinks are available for purchase on site. The minimum age for entry is 16 years. While dogs are permitted at the campsite if controlled, they are not allowed on the running course.
