The Cottonmouth Beerlay

The Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay takes place at the Lakewood Nature Preserve in Greenville, South Carolina. The event is held on a 2 mile grassy trail loop within the preserve, which participants navigate four times. The terrain features rolling hills and runs through a scenic, shaded environment known for local wildlife sightings such as deer and foxes. A rustic barn on the property serves as the central race headquarters and staging area.

Participants can choose between two primary registration options:

  • 8 Mile Solo - A single runner completes all four laps.
  • 8 Mile Relay - Teams of 2 to 4 runners share the distance, with each person completing a lap.

Before starting each 2 mile lap, participants consume a beverage. For those participating in the drinking portion, the event uses a community pool system where runners contribute beverages that are then randomly selected by volunteers. Each participant who chooses to drink must bring four beverages with at least a 5% ABV. Non-alcoholic, carbonated alternatives are also permitted for minors or those who prefer a sober experience.

The event includes several post-race activities held at the preserve. After finishing the 8 miles, attendees have access to a hot dog bar and pizza. The gathering features various yard games, including beer pong, tug of war, dodgeball, cornhole, hillbilly golf, and spike ball. All participants receive a custom race bib and giveaway swag, with free event photos provided after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
