About the race
Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay is an 8 mile running event held at Lakewood Nature Preserve in Greenville, SC. The main format is either a solo 8 mile run or a relay team of two to four runners, with each participant covering one of four laps. The course is a two-mile grassy trail loop through shaded preserve land with rolling hills and wildlife sightings, and the route is run four times to complete the distance. The event pairs each lap with a mystery beer from a communal iced pool: participants bring beers that go into the pool and a volunteer hands a randomly drawn, already opened beer before each lap.
A non-alcoholic division is available for under-21 runners and anyone who prefers a nonalcoholic alternative; those runners are scored in their own division. Race headquarters and beer staging take place at a rustic barn near the start and finish. Packet pickup is on site at the barn and team captains may collect an entire team’s bibs and timing tags. There is ample parking in field lots adjacent to the barn; a one time special use permit fee is collected during registration. Finish line amenities include live chip timing with posted results, free event photos after the race, a finisher medal, and free Beer Olympics admission with activities such as beer pong, tug of war, dodgeball, cornhole, hillbilly golf and spike ball.
Water is available at the finish. Awards are given to top solo finishers and to teams across multiple divisions and age groups. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
