Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay
The Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay is an 8 mile trail event held at Lakewood Nature Preserve in Greenville, SC. The course consists of a 2 mile grassy trail loop that is repeated four times. The route includes rolling hills, wooded sections and typical preserve wildlife, and a rustic barn serves as the race headquarters and beer-staging area.
Events are offered as a solo effort or a relay team of two to four people. Solo runners complete all four laps; relay teams tag one runner per lap. Chip timing is used with four-lap split tracking for both solo and relay entries. Entry includes park access, a custom race bib, and a finisher medal. The event provides complimentary race photos and event-themed giveaways.
This is a BYOB event with specific drinking rules: each runner brings four beers of at least 5% ABV to a shared iced pool. Before each lap a volunteer distributes a randomly selected, already opened beer that the runner must consume. No swapping or peeking is allowed. Drinking portions are restricted to participants aged 21 and over; nonalcoholic carbonated alternatives are permitted for minors and sober participants.
Post-race features include a hot dog bar, music, a Beer Olympics with yard games, and awards for top finishers and team divisions. The event supports the local preserve and associated giving efforts. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
