Event overview

The Chiltern Ridge Classic 50K is a trail ultra marathon held on 18 April 2026 in the Chiltern Hills. The route covers 51K with about 996 m of elevation gain, starting at Berkhamsted Castle and finishing at Hampden Meadow in Wendover. The course follows parts of The Ridgeway National Trail and passes Ashridge, Ivinghoe Beacon, Coombe Hill and Whiteleaf Hill. The route is slightly long at 51 km due to HS2 road and footpath closures around Wendover.

Key details and logistics

The race is limited to 400 runners and has a 9-hour time limit. It is licensed by the Trail Running Association and held under UKA rules, and it is a UTMB World Series Index Race. The course is fully marked with orange arrows and ribbons and marshals will be positioned at road crossings and busy sections. Runners must carry a digital GPX of the route and printed maps are available.

There are three full checkpoints at about 15 km, 29 km and 43 km. Checkpoints provide water, Coke, Precision Fuel & Hydration products (pre-mixed electrolyte drink, gels and chews), snacks including crisps, sweets and flapjacks, and fresh fruit. Satellite water points may be added in hot weather.

Required kit includes a mobile phone with an emergency number saved, route GPX plus paper map, a light jacket or emergency blanket, a refillable hydration system (minimum 0.5 L), a collapsible cup and cash or bank card. Facilities at the event base include temporary toilets, pop-up changing tents, refreshments at the finish, chip timing with live results, medical support on course, a finishers medal and race photos.
