The MTC Oxford Ultra

The MTC Oxford Ultra is an endurance event covering a distance of 49 miles along the Thames Path. This race serves as the second stage of the Thames Challenge, a four-day event spanning 184 miles. Participants can enter this specific stage independently without committing to the full four-day challenge. The course is designed for experienced trail runners and follows the longest riverside path in England through the Oxfordshire countryside.

The route begins at Abingdon Road in Oxford and initially heads toward the river. Runners pass through several locations, including Sandford Weir, Culham, and Cholsey. After a section through Moulsford, the path returns to the banks of the River Thames, leading participants through Streatley and Whitchurch-on-Thames. The course includes a short diversion through Purley Park and past Tilehurst before reaching the finish line at the Catherine Wheel in Reading.

Participants must navigate using mandatory gear, including an OS Map, compass, or GPS device, as well as a head torch and a first aid kit. The event features three checkpoints providing water and nutritional snacks. This is a cup-free race, requiring runners to carry a reusable cup. To remain in the event, participants must maintain a minimum average pace of 4 mph.
