The MTC Oxford Ultra is a point-to-point ultra running race of 49 miles starting at Travelodge Oxford Abingdon Road and finishing at The Catherine Wheel, Henley-on-Thames. The course ascent is 293 m and descent is 328 m. Entry for an individual is listed at £90; a deferral option to the following year is available for £15. All deposits and payments are non-refundable unless the organiser cancels the event and reschedules or refunds less out-of-pocket expenses.
All finishers receive a bespoke Oxford Ultra medal and one of: a technical t-shirt, a mug, or a hat. The first male and female finishers receive a bespoke Oxford Ultra trophy and a bespoke medal. UTMB points and the course record are listed as to be advised.
Entrants must be aged at least 20 on the start day. Competitors must arrange their own transport to the start and from the finish. By entering, competitors accept the organiser’s terms and conditions, including rules on behaviour, photography rights, and non-refundable fees.
Route, checkpoints and kit
The route follows the Thames Path after about 0.5 miles, passing Sandford Weir, Culham, Cholsey, Moulsford, Streatley, Whitchurch-on-Thames, Purley Park, Tilehurst and Reading before arriving at Henley-on-Thames.
Competitors must be self-sufficient and carry mandatory kit that includes:
- backpack or equivalent
- head torch with spare batteries
- OS map or downloadable maps / GPX device or phone with route
- compass or GPS device
- whistle, mobile phone and first aid kit
There are three checkpoints that provide water and some nutrition. Example checkpoint items may include malt loaf, sandwiches, sweets, dried fruit, squash, cola and water; dietary options for gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian are catered for where possible. Competitors must maintain an average of at least 4.0 mph; failing this will result in removal from the race. Checkpoint closure times are set relative to the race start (CP1: 3 hr 5 min; CP2: 6 hr 16 min; CP3: 9 hr 38 min; Finish: 12 hr 8 min).
