Event overview

The MTC Oxford Ultra is a point-to-point ultramarathon of 49 miles finishing in Henley-on-Thames. The route starts at Travelodge Oxford Abingdon Road and follows the Thames Path for much of the course, passing Sandford Weir, Culham, Cholsey, Moulsford, Streatley, Whitchurch-on-Thames, Purley Park, Tilehurst and Reading before arriving at the Catherine Wheel in Henley-on-Thames. Total ascent is 293 metres and total descent is 328 metres.

Course, checkpoints and navigation

The race has three check-points that provide water and some nutrition. Example items listed include malt loaf, cake, jam, peanut butter, cheese or marmite sandwiches, sweets, dried fruits, squash, cola and water. Organisers endeavour to cater for gluten free, vegan and vegetarian diets if advised at entry; other dietary needs must be supplied by the competitor. Competitors may leave drop bags at CPs. Competitors must carry navigation - a GPX device or the route downloaded onto a phone with sufficient battery backup - and a mobile phone.

  • Start to Checkpoint 1 - 12.3 miles
  • Checkpoint 1 to Checkpoint 2 - 12.7 miles
  • Checkpoint 2 to Checkpoint 3 - 13.4 miles
  • Checkpoint 3 to Finish - 9.7 miles

Competitors must maintain an average of 4.0 miles per hour (including stops); those falling below this will be withdrawn. Competitors must be self-sufficient for transport to the start and from the finish.

Entry, kit and prizes

Entry fee is £90 (all payments and deposits non-refundable). There is an option to run free by raising an agreed amount for the preferred charity. All finishers receive a bespoke Oxford Ultra medal and either a technical t-shirt, mug or hat; the first male and female finishers receive bespoke trophies. Entrants must be at least 20 years old.
