The Calderdale Hike
The Calderdale Hike is an established annual event held in the high Pennine valleys of Calderdale. Running since 1979, the event follows circular routes that head west from Sowerby toward the Lancashire border. The courses consist of tracks across open moors and include multiple steep ascents and descents between moor tops. The event is organized by the 24th St Paul's Scout Group to support their work with young people.
Participants can choose from three different distances, each open to walkers and runners. The minimum age for all courses is 14 years.
- 35 miles with approximately 5500 feet of ascent.
- 24 miles with approximately 3800 feet of ascent.
- 16 miles with approximately 2700 feet of ascent.
The event starts and finishes at St Peter's Cricket Club in Sowerby Bridge. Facilities at the headquarters include a licensed bar and a hot meal for finishers. A compulsory kit check is conducted for all participants one hour before their respective start times. Due to the nature of the terrain and the potential for inclement weather, the organizers recommend that participants possess navigation skills.
The entry fee includes refreshments at checkpoints, water at roadside stations, and transport back to the headquarters from any roadside retirement point. All finishers receive a certificate of achievement and a full results sheet. Free parking is available at the nearby Ryburn School and on the surrounding roads. All participants must complete their chosen route by 8 pm. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
