Cairnsmore Hill Race

The Cairnsmore Hill Race is a fell running event scheduled for December 2026 in the Southern Galloway mountains. It is the third edition of this race, organized by the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.

Course Details

The race follows a circular route of 17.50 km (11 miles) with 800 m of ascent. The route starts from Muirfad Farm, heads over Knocktim, climbs steeply through the Door of Cairnsmore, continues north along the Knee of Cairnsmore to the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet, and descends south-west to the finish. Checkpoints are located at specified grid references along the course.

Participation Requirements

This winter fell race is for participants aged 18 and over. Runners must have fell running experience and navigation skills, as it can be run in full winter conditions. Mandatory kit includes a map, compass, whistle, waterproof top with integral hood and taped seams, waterproof bottoms with taped seams, hat, and gloves.

Organization and Support

Marshalls from Galloway Mountain Rescue Team will be on the course to monitor checkpoints, provide first aid, and serve hot soup and refreshments at the finish. All profits from the race are donated to Galloway Mountain Rescue Team. The event holds a permit from the Scottish Hill Runners association and is run under SHR rules.
