Heart of Granite

Heart of Granite is a circular fell race in the Galloway Hills, 20 miles with 1850 metres of ascent. The route starts and finishes at Caldons Old Campsite and climbs through Lamachan to Curleywee, then to the Axe Head checkpoint on the Southern Upland Way. Runners ascend Craiglee, traverse the plateau to the Rig of Jarkness, descend to the Murder Hole, and climb the Old Grey Man of Merrick before returning to Caldons, where hot soup and a beer await.

Supported by Galloway Mountain Rescue, the race is run under SHR rules as a winter navigation challenge. It was revived in 2025 by Nicky Spinks and Galloway MRT. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
