The Heart of Granite is an organised fell race held at Caldons Old Campsite, Glen Trool, Newton Stewart, DG8 6SU. Entry is by pre-entry only, with a fee of £25. The minimum age is 18. Teams of four are allowed. The event is permitted and organised with marshals and first aid cover provided by Galloway Mountain Rescue; all profits from the race will go to Galloway Mountain Rescue Team. The event has recorded entries and a closing date for pre-entry.

Course, requirements and kit

The route is a circular mountain course that passes named features including Lamachan ridge, Curleywee, the Axe Head stone on the Southern Upland Way, Craiglee, the Rig of Jarkness, the Murder Hole, the Old Grey Man of Merrick and Bruce's Stone before returning to Caldons. The course distance is 20 miles (32.2 km) with 1850 m of ascent. Runners should have fell running experience and navigation skills because the event can be run in winter conditions. Mandatory kit that must be carried or worn includes a map, compass, whistle, waterproof top with integral hood and taped seams, waterproof bottoms with taped seams, head torch, hat and gloves. The Hillbilly 10K will take place in Dalmellington on Tuesday 25 November 2025. You can run 10 kilometers.
