Race Across Scotland
The Race Across Scotland is a coast to coast ultra-marathon covering a distance of 215 miles (346 km). The route follows the Southern Upland Way, a Scottish National Trail that traverses the country from the coastline of Portpatrick to Cockburnspath. Participants navigate through a variety of landscapes, including mountains, valleys, and deep forests of the Southern Uplands.
The event features a total elevation gain of 7218 m. Runners have a strict 100-hour cut-off time to complete the course. There are 12 checkpoints located along the route, providing water, sports drinks, and a variety of snacks. Hot food is available at checkpoints situated in village halls. Live tracking is used throughout the event to monitor participant progress.
The race is open to runners who meet specific qualifying criteria, including a background in endurance running and the ability to self-navigate using a map and compass. Participants must be at least 20 years old. While the race is primarily self-sufficient between checkpoints, support crews are permitted from the third checkpoint onwards, though they are restricted from certain locations to manage traffic and local access.
Mandatory equipment is required for all participants, including:
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Hardcopy Southern Upland Way map
- Base plate compass
- Headtorch with spare batteries
- Survival bag
- Emergency food rations (500 calories)
A dropbag facility allows runners to transport supplies to specific checkpoints and the finish line. As a cupless event, runners must provide their own reusable cups for drinks at aid stations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
