Cactus Roulette Endurance Event
Cactus Roulette is a duration trail race held at Clinton Lake State Park in Lawrence, Kansas. The event is organized by the Lawrence Trail Hawks and offers four time options: a 24-hour race, two 12-hour options called Owl and Lark, and a 6-hour event. Base camp is at Coneflower Campground and includes food, water, porta potties, heaters, access to personal drop bags, and live result monitors.
Runners spin a roulette wheel before each loop to determine which of three marked loops they will run next. All loops begin and end at base camp and are run counter-clockwise. There are three starting mats, one per loop, and loops are color-coded to match the wheel.
Course loops:
- Blue Swim Beach, 3.6 miles, 253 ft elevation, technical trail.
- Green Cactus Ridge, 2.6 miles, 239 ft elevation, technical north-side trails.
- Red Bunker Hill, 1.9 miles, 150 ft elevation, cross-country field with two steep climbs.
Every starter receives a completion award. Awards are presented in male, female, and nonbinary categories for each time option. First place 24-hour finishers may receive a cash prize if minimum distance requirements are met, and 24-hour runners who reach 100 miles receive custom belt buckles mailed after the race. Each time block is capped at 50 runners. Dogs are not allowed. In certain conditions an alternate course may be used; refunds are not guaranteed if the event is postponed or canceled.
