Tale of Two Trails
Tale of Two Trails takes place at Shawnee Mission Park in Johnson County, Kansas, with start and finish at Shelter 8. The event uses two separate trail systems in the park; the 10 mile course runs on one system while the longer courses combine both North and South shore trails. Each loop used for the longer distances measures approximately 20 miles.
The trail surface varies from smooth runnable sections to technical stretches with roots, rocks and rolling hills. Most of the route runs under tree canopy with a few exposed sections. The course will be marked with flags, ribbons and signage; runners are responsible for knowing and following the marked route. Trails remain open to the public during the event.
If the primary trails are closed, an alternate single 10 mile course will be used. The alternate route mixes cross country, gravel, paved and power line corridors and uses a central aid station. Start, finish and parking locations remain the same if the backup course is implemented.
Aid stations are cupless; runners must carry a reusable cup for beverages. Stations offer a range of food and drink options and carry first aid kits but do not supply over the counter NSAIDs. Drop bags are permitted for the 40 and 50 mile distances and can be transported between specified aid stations. Timing is by clock and this is not a chipped race. Pacers and crew are allowed under specified rules and may be restricted to certain locations. Overall podium awards are given for each distance and all finishers receive a medal. The event is presented with a stated commitment to inclusion and supports the Trail Mix Fund. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
