Tale of Two Trails : Shawnee Mission Park, Shawnee, KS
Tale of Two Trails is a multi-distance trail running event held in Shawnee Mission Park, Johnson County, Kansas. The event uses two separate trail systems in the park; the 20 mile loop is the standard unit of course layout and the 10 mile race runs entirely on one trail system.
Distances:
- 50 miles
- 40 miles
- 20 miles
- 10 miles
The terrain mixes smooth, runnable sections with technical stretches including roots, rocks, and rolling hills. Much of the course runs beneath tree canopy with some exposed sections. Course markings include flags, ribbons, and extra signage at turns; runners are responsible for knowing and following the marked route. Trails remain open to the public during the event, and road crossings require runners to take care for traffic and other trail users.
Aid stations are cupless; runners must carry a reusable cup for beverages. Stations provide a variety of options such as Tailwind, sodas, fruit, sandwiches, salty snacks, sweets, and soup later in the day. First aid kits are available but medication such as NSAIDs will not be provided. Drop bags are permitted for 40 mile and 50 mile runners and are transported between specified aid stations.
Timing is by clock and this is not a chipped race; bibs must be visible from the front. If a runner withdraws they must notify aid station staff to be recorded as did not finish. Pacers are permitted for 50 mile runners under the event’s pacing rules; crew access is limited to designated areas. The race operates under park hour constraints and organizers may switch to an alternate 10 mile backup course or modify operations for safety in coordination with park officials.
