Black Mountains 50 & 32 Mile Ultra, Marathon & Half Marathon

The Black Mountains event takes place in the Brecon Beacons National Park, featuring courses that consist of approximately 90% trails and 10% roads or lanes. The race headquarters is located at Longtown Hall in Hereford, which serves as both the start and finish point for the various distances.

Participants can choose from four distinct distances:

  • 80 km (50 miles) with 11,059 feet of elevation
  • 50 km (32 miles) with 6,663 feet of elevation
  • 43.4 km (27 miles) with 5,505 feet of elevation
  • 21 km (13 miles) with 2,738 feet of elevation

All distances are self-navigated, although organizers provide GPX files and may place flags or signs in specific areas where confusion is possible. Runners are monitored via trackers throughout the race. A strict mandatory kit list is enforced for all participants, including waterproof clothing, a race pack, a foil blanket, and a head torch.

The event provides full support including medical care, professional physio services, and chip timing. Checkpoints and water stations are positioned along the routes. Ultra-distance runners receive hot food, while all participants have access to refreshments and food at the finish line. All courses have a 24-hour cut-off time.

The 50-mile route passes several landmarks, including Llanthony Abbey, Hatterall Hill, Pen Cerrig Calch, Cat’s Back, Waun Fach, and Lord Hereford's Knob. Facilities at the site include toilets and parking, with local camping options available nearby. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
