Event Details
The Beast of the Beacons is a trail running event offering three distances: a 10-mile route, a 20-mile route, and a 40-mile ultra. It takes place in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Route and Location
All routes start and finish at Henderson Hall in Talybont on Usk. The course explores forests, mountains, rivers, reservoirs, and trails, with possible terrain including rocky paths, soft forest trails, mud, and river crossings. Snow can sometimes be encountered. The 40-mile course consists of two laps of the 20-mile route, with the second lap run in reverse.

- 10 miles (16 km): Elevation gain of 2,026 feet.
- 20 miles (32.5 km): Elevation gain of 4,219 feet.
- 40 miles (65 km): Elevation gain of 8,438 feet.
The course is marked and has marshals. Cut-off times are 8 hours for the 10-mile and 20-mile routes, and 16 hours for the 40-mile route.
Facilities and Features
The event is canicross-friendly for dogs over 12 months old, which must be kept on a lead. There are three well-stocked checkpoints providing food and drink, catering to various dietary requirements including vegan options. Post-race refreshments are available.
Facilities include on-site basic camping, toilets, a coffee van, a full medical team, and a physio. A pre-event kit check is mandatory.
What Participants Receive
All finishers receive a bespoke medal. Prizes include handcrafted Welsh slate trophies for the top three finishers and for first male and female veterans over 50 and 60.
