Beast of the Beacons 10, 20 & 40 Mile Ultra

The Beast of the Beacons is a trail running event held within the Brecon Beacons National Park. Starting from Gilestone Farm in Talybont on Usk, participants navigate a course that includes manual marking and marshal support. The routes utilize a variety of terrain including mountain ridges, forest trails, and technical rocky paths.

Available distances include:

  • 10 Miles: A trail route through the national park.
  • 20 Miles: An intermediate distance featuring significant elevation changes.
  • 40 Miles: An ultra-distance event consisting of the 20-mile route run in reverse.

The course leads runners past landmarks such as the Talybont and Pontsticill reservoirs, the Waun Rydd ridge, and the Brecon Mountain Railway track. Participants encounter varying conditions, from soft forest trails and river crossings to potentially snowy sections on the higher ground.

The event provides three refuel zones stocked with nutrition and fluids. The 40-mile ultra distance includes hot food at the finish line. Facilities at the event hub include camping, physiotherapy, parking, and mobile catering. Minimum age for entry is 16 years old. A mandatory kit list is in effect, requiring all runners to carry waterproof clothing, a first aid kit, a head torch, and a reusable cup as the event is cup-free.

Participants receive a bespoke medal upon completion. Trophies are awarded to the top three finishers, veteran categories for those over 50 and 60, and the first canine finisher. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
