Black Cattle Ultra Gwartheg Duon

The Black Cattle Ultra Gwartheg Duon is a point-to-point endurance event that travels from the Black Mountains to Cardiff. The race name is inspired by the local Welsh Black cattle found in the region. Runners traverse a variety of terrain, including mountain fells with ancient forts, wooded valleys, and ridges, passing landmarks such as Llanthony Priory and Castell Coch.

Participants can choose from two distances:

  • 44 miles (71 km): Starts at Llanthony Priory in the Black Mountains and finishes in Cardiff.
  • 33 miles (53 km): Begins in Abergavenny and follows the final 33 miles of the longer route.

The event requires self-navigation as the course is not marked. Athletes follow the Cambrian Way markers for the majority of the journey before switching to the Taff Trail for the final miles. GPX files are provided for navigation. There is a mandatory kit check at registration, and participants must carry the required equipment to compete.

The 44-mile route includes three indoor aid stations providing warm food, while the 33-mile route includes two. Additional water points are located approximately every six miles. Facilities at the race headquarters in Cardiff include changing rooms, showers, and parking. The organizers offer optional transport from the finish line to the starting locations for an additional fee. Every finisher receives a locally sourced memento, and awards are presented to the top three male and female runners, as well as veteran winners.

The event follows the SheRaces charter to support female entries. Tracking devices are provided to all runners to allow for progress monitoring throughout the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
