Event Overview
The Beacons Way Ultra 100 Mile is an ultramarathon through the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park in South Wales. The route covers 100 miles following the Beacons Way National Trail, starting from the ruins of Abergavenny Castle and concluding at Llangadog RFC.
The course involves 6,143 meters of total ascent, traversing the Black Mountains, the central Beacons, and the Carmarthen Fans. Significant milestones along the trail include the Skirrid, Llanthony Abbey, and Pen-y-Fan, which is the highest mountain in South Wales at 886m.
Participation Requirements
This is a self-navigation event. Participants must be at least 20 years old and are required to demonstrate the ability to navigate using a physical map and compass. Entry is restricted to those who have successfully completed an organized ultramarathon of at least 50 miles and have experience in mountainous terrain.
Logistics and Support
The event features 10 checkpoints positioned along the trail, providing refreshments such as water, fruit, sandwiches, and hot food at indoor locations. Specific regulations apply to the 100-mile distance:
- 100 miles: Includes a 40-hour cut-off time and 10 supported checkpoints.
A mandatory kit must be carried throughout the race, including specific Ordnance Survey or Harvey maps, a base plate compass, a headtorch, and emergency rations. GPS tracking is provided for all runners. Optional services include dropbag transport to two designated checkpoints and the finish line, as well as coach transport from the finish back to the start venue.
Accreditations
