Afoot in Two Dales
Afoot in Two Dales is a 50 mile, 5,500 ft circuit through the Yorkshire Dales that uses footpaths, bridleways and quiet roads across Wensleydale and Swaledale. The route includes an ascent of Great Shunner Fell and must be completed within 22 hours. The event is intended for experienced walkers and runners and involves night time sections over open moorland.
The route starts and finishes at Harmby Village Hall, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, where free parking, showers and changing facilities are available. The course passes through Redmire, Haverdale, Muker, Great Shunner, Hawes, Bainbridge, Thoralby and West Witton. Checkpoints operate with opening and closing windows; participants must pass through and depart checkpoints within those windows or face disqualification.
Entry is limited to 250 participants and is by SI Entries only; no paper or on-the-day entries are accepted. Entrants must be 18 or older and dogs are not allowed. Electronic trackers will be used; the organiser provides assistance with fitting the device and a charge applies for lost or damaged trackers. Entry fees include refreshments at checkpoints, tea and toast at registration, a hot meal on the route, a meal at the finish and a finisher certificate.
A suggested kit list for moorland and night walking is provided and includes suitable footwear, waterproofs, spare warm layers, compass, whistle, torch with spare batteries and an emergency bivvy or survival bag.
