Afoot in Two Dales

Afoot in Two Dales is a long-distance walking and running event that follows a roughly 50 miles circuit with about 5,500 ft of ascent through the Yorkshire Dales. The route uses footpaths, bridleways and quiet roads across Wensleydale and Swaledale and includes an ascent of Great Shunner Fell. The course starts and finishes at Harmby Village Hall, Brook Terrace, Leyburn, DL8 5PG, where free parking and changing facilities are available.

The route passes through Redmire, Haverdale, Muker, Great Shunner Fell, Hawes, Bainbridge, Thoralby and West Witton before returning to Harmby. Participants must complete the course within 22 hours and pass through a series of timed checkpoints; failing to meet checkpoint time rules leads to disqualification.

This year electronic trackers are in use; devices are small and lightweight and should be attached to the top strap of a rucksack or bumbag. Organisers will assist with fitting and the trackers are insured for loss or damage. The event is for adults only; dogs are not permitted.

Entry includes refreshments at registration and checkpoints, a hot meal partway, a meal at the finish, a certificate and shower and changing facilities. Navigational skills are required for night walking over open moorland. A suggested equipment list includes suitable footwear, waterproofs, warm layers, compass, whistle, torch with spare batteries, emergency bag, drinks and food. Route description and GPX files are available for download. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
