Afoot in Two Dales (The Yorkshire 50)
This event is a 50-mile/5,500ft circuit designed for experienced walkers and runners. It takes place on a weekend in July and offers a maximum completion time of 22 hours.
Route and Checkpoints
The route is a 50-mile circuit through the dales of Wensleydale and Swaledale, including an ascent of Great Shunner Fell. It uses footpaths, bridleways, and quiet roads. The start and finish is at Harmby Village Hall in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.
A list of checkpoints with opening and closing times is provided. Participants must pass through each checkpoint after its opening time and leave (except the finish) before its closing time to avoid disqualification. The checkpoints are:
- Redmire
- Haverdale
- Muker
- Hawes
- Bainbridge
- Thoralby
- West Witton
- Harmby (Finish)
Participant Information
Entry is limited to 250 people and is only available online, with no entries accepted on the day. The event uses electronic trackers, and there is a significant charge for any lost or damaged device. Entry fees vary for members and non-members of the LDWA, with an early bird rate available.
Entry includes tea and toast at registration, refreshments at checkpoints, a meal at the finish, and a finisher certificate. Showers and changing facilities are available.
The suggested mandatory kit includes suitable footwear, waterproofs, compass, whistle, torch, emergency bivvy bag, and food. A mug must be brought by the participant. Navigational skills are required for night walking on open moorland. The event is for participants aged 18 and over, and dogs are not permitted.
