Afoot in Two Dales
Afoot in Two Dales is a long-distance, one-day event over moorland in the Yorkshire Dales on 18–19 July 2026. The route is a 50 mile circuit with about 5,500 ft of ascent, using footpaths, bridleways and quiet roads through Wensleydale and Swaledale and including an ascent of Great Shunner Fell. The course starts and finishes at Harmby Village Hall in Leyburn.
The route passes Redmire, Haverdale, Muker, Great Shunner Fell, Hawes, Bainbridge, Thoralby and West Witton before returning to Harmby. Checkpoints are positioned along the route with approximate leg mileages; participants must comply with checkpoint opening and closing times or face disqualification. A simple route description and GPX file are available for navigation; the route description must be carried and used with a map or GPS.
Electronic trackers are compulsory for entrants; the organiser provides small lightweight devices, assists with fitting at registration and insures against loss or damage. The event is restricted to people aged 18 or over and does not allow dogs.
Entry includes tea and toast at registration, refreshments at checkpoints, a hot meal just over halfway, a meal at the finish and a certificate. Showers, changing facilities and free car parking are provided. Refunds are possible up to one month before the event less a £5 administration fee; substitutions are permitted with prior notice.
