About the race
The 20 Barriers Race is a countryside running event that follows a 5 mile scenic loop on field paths, trails and canal towpath to the south of Carnforth. The course is based at Carnforth High School and takes runners through farmland and towpath sections. The event name refers to the number of stiles and field boundaries crossed along the route; these are described as not presenting unusual hazards. Trail or studded shoes are advised.
The race is run under FRA rules and is open to competitors aged 16 or over on the day of the event. Entry is accepted on the night for a fee of £10; there is no pre-entry option. Organizers note that recent changes to the start and finish due to new perimeter fencing at the school are now permanent and that maps and a pre-race briefing are provided.
Since 2022 the course has reverted to its traditional return route through the old Lundsfield quarry area, follows yellow marker posts to Kellet Road canal bridge, and crosses a pale green footbridge down to the towpath. Course records set in 2022 include a male time of 31:39 and a female time of 37:33.
Prizes include goody bags for the first three men and first three women plus other spot prizes. The event aims to reduce single-use plastic; some water and juice are available at the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
