Swirral Grind 850 : Lake District Sky Trails
The Swirral Grind is an uphill only race run in the style of a Vertical K. The course is approximately 6 km of continuous ascent with about 850 m of climb, starting from the King George Playing Field in Patterdale, the events field that hosts the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra and Rab Pinnacle Ridge Extreme.
Runners follow steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the "Hole in the Wall", then run across the flats of the Red Tarn Basin before a second ascent to the ridge-line of Swirral Edge. The final section includes easy scrambling to reach the summit and the trig point at 950 m. The route therefore includes an ascent of Helvellyn, described as the third highest mountain in the Lakes.
Entry provisions listed for the event include a fully marked course, manned checkpoints, a professional Safety Officer and supporting safety team delivered by Mountain Run, and a professionally planned event delivered by an experienced team.
