Swirral Grind 850 - Patterdale
The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill-only mountain race held in Patterdale. The course covers 6 km with approximately 850 m of ascent, beginning at the King George Playing Field. The route climbs Helvellyn and continues up Swirral Edge to a summit trig point at about 950 m.
The route follows steep and stepped paths and reaches a feature known as the 'Hole in the Wall' before running across the flats of the Red Tarn Basin. A second ascent leads to the Swirral Edge ridge where easy scrambling is required to reach the summit. The race takes place within a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site area.
Entries open 4 October 2025 and close 15 July 2026. The minimum age to enter is 16 and the published entry fee is £30. The event includes a fully marked course, manned checkpoints, a recycled paper-mache wild flower seed bomb medal, and a professional safety officer with a supporting safety team provided by Mountain Run.
