Swirral Grind 850
The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill only mountain race held in Patterdale on 17 July 2026. Designed in the style of a Vertical K, the route is a continuous ascent that starts at the King George Playing Field, the event field used for the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend.
The course covers 6 km with 850 m ascent. Runners follow steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the Hole in the Wall, cross the flats of the Red Tarn Basin, then climb a second and final ascent to the ridge of Swirral Edge. The route involves sections of easy scrambling to reach the summit trig point at about 950 m.
Event services listed for the race include a fully marked course, a manned checkpoint, a recycled paper mache wild flower seed bomb medal, and a safety officer with a supporting safety team provided by Mountain Run. The published entry fee is £30 and the minimum age for entry is 16 years. The race is organised as part of the wider Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend and is based in the Patterdale area of the Lake District. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
