The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill-only mountain race held in Patterdale on 17 July 2026. The event is based at King George Playing Field. The course covers 6 km with 850 m of ascent. Entry fee is £30. Entries open 4 October 2025 and close 15 July 2026. The minimum age is 16.
Course and included services
The route is a continuous ascent designed in the style of a Vertical K, starting from the event field. Runners follow steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the "Hole in the Wall", then cross the flats of the Red Tarn Basin before a second ascent to the Swirral Edge ridge. The final section involves easy scrambling to a trig point at about 950 m. The event is run as part of the Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend and takes place within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Included in the entry are a fully marked course, manned checkpoints, a recycled paper mache wild flower seed bomb medal, and a professional safety officer with a supporting safety team provided by Mountain Run.
