Swirral Grind 850 - Event details

The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill-only mountain race in the style of a Vertical K. It takes place on 17 July 2026 and is based in Patterdale, starting at the King George Playing Field. The course covers 6 km with 850 m of ascent. The event is part of the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend. Entry fee is £30. Entries open 4 October 2025 and close 15 July 2026. The minimum age for entry is 16.

Course and event services

The route follows steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the "Hole in the Wall", then crosses the flats of the Red Tarn Basin before a second ascent to the ridge-line of Swirral Edge. The final section includes easy scrambling to reach the summit trig point at 950 m. Entry includes a fully marked course and manned checkpoint(s). Participants receive a recycled paper mache wild flower seed bomb medal. A professional safety officer and supporting safety team are provided by Mountain Run, and the event is delivered by an experienced organising team.
