Swirral Grind 850

The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill only race in the style of a Vertical K held on 17 July 2026 as part of the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend. The course covers 6 km with 850 m of ascent, starts from the King George Playing Field in Patterdale, and has a minimum age of 16. The published entry fee is £30. Entries opened on 4 October 2025 and close on 15 July 2026.

The route is a continuous ascent that follows steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the Hole in the Wall, crosses the flats of the Red Tarn Basin, then makes a second climb to the ridge line of Swirral Edge. The final section includes easy scrambling to reach the summit trig point at about 950 m on Helvellyn, the third highest mountain in the Lakes. The event description notes a fully marked course, a manned checkpoint, a recycled paper mache wild flower seed bomb medal for finishers, and a professional safety officer and supporting safety team provided by Mountain Run. The race takes place within the designated UNESCO World Heritage Site area and is delivered by an experienced event team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
