Lake District Sky Trails - Swirral Grind 850
The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill only race held in Patterdale on 17 July 2026 as part of the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend. The route starts at the King George Playing Field and gains the full race ascent without any descent sections.
The course covers 6 km with 850 m of ascent and finishes at the trig point near the summit ridge. Runners follow steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the Hole in the Wall, cross the flats of the Red Tarn Basin, then complete a second ascent to the Swirral Edge ridge where easy scrambling leads to the summit at 950 m.
Event services listed by the organiser include a fully marked course, a manned checkpoint, a professional safety officer and safety team delivered by Mountain Run, and a recycled paper mache wild flower seed bomb medal. The event has a minimum age of 16 and an entry fee of £30. Entries opened on 4 October 2025 and close on 15 July 2026.
