The Swirral Grind 850 is an uphill-only mountain race organised by Lake District Sky Trails. It takes place on 17 July 2026 in Patterdale, with the start location at King George Playing Field. The course is 6 km long with 850 m of ascent. The minimum age to enter is 16. Entry fee is £30. Entries open 4 October 2025 and close 15 July 2026. The race is offered as part of the Rab Helvellyn Sky Ultra weekend.
Course and race services
The route is a continuous ascent from the event field, described in the style of a Vertical K. Runners follow steep and stepped paths to the feature known as the "Hole in the Wall", then cross the flats of the Red Tarn Basin before a final climb to the ridge-line of Swirral Edge. The finish is at the summit trig point at 950 m, including sections of easy scrambling. Entry includes a fully marked course, manned checkpoints, a recycled paper-mache wild flower seed bomb medal, and a Safety Officer with a supporting safety team provided by Mountain Run.
