The Tolkien Trail Race

The Tolkien Trail Race takes place in the Ribble Valley, starting and finishing at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. This event follows the specific landscapes and trails that served as inspiration for the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien, including "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit."

The course covers a distance of 11.1 km with an elevation gain of 528 ft. Participants begin the race on the Avenue of Stonyhurst College, transitioning onto farm tracks and into local woodland. The route includes a descent of forest steps and a crossing of an old stone bridge over the River Hodder.

Notable landmarks along the trail include the Cromwell Bridge (dating back to 1562) and an aqueduct built in 1880 situated along the River Ribble. The path also passes through fields behind the Shireburn Arms before returning through the village of Hurst Green and back to the college.
