Wye Valley Tunnel Run

Event overview

The Wye Valley Tunnel Run is a set of running events on the Wye Valley Greenway, based at Wyedean School in Sedbury, Chepstow. The event uses the former railway line and the restored Tidenham Tunnel and offers multiple distances on largely out-and-back courses. The Tidenham Tunnel is over 1 km long and is included in the routes.

• 500 m Colourburst (lap format for children)
• 2 km Colourburst (lap format for children)
• 10 km (Valley View one lap)
• Half marathon (Valley View two laps or Tintern Station one lap)
• Marathon (Tintern Station two laps)

Course and terrain

Most of the routes follow the old railway track and riverside paths, giving a predominantly flat, compact stone or tarmac surface. Some Tintern Station routes include a short 50 m rocky trail section and a few flights of steps. The Valley View 10 km route includes about 2 km in tunnel; its half marathon variant includes about 4 km in tunnel. The Tintern Station half and marathon include tunnel distances as stated in the distance descriptions.

Aid, markings and facilities

Courses are waymarked and marshalled. Feast stations provide water, electrolyte drinks and a mix of food including gluten free, dairy free and vegan options; there is at least one feast station on the 10 km, three on the half marathon and seven on the marathon. There are on site toilets, a mobile coffee van and a bag drop; there are no changing rooms. Onsite parking is charged at £2 per car and the nearest train station is Chepstow, about 1 mile away.

Entries, medals and cut offs

Age minimums apply: no minimum for the Colourburst, 15 for the 10 km, 17 for the half marathon and 18 for the marathon. All runners of 5 km and longer receive a 10 cm x 10 cm two-sided event medal.
