Winter on the Downs

Winter on the Downs comprises three single-loop ultramarathon races on the trails of East and West Sussex, starting and finishing in the seaside town of Eastbourne. The event base is East Dean Village Hall, Eastbourne BN20 0DR.

Distances:

  • 50k
  • 55 miles
  • 100 miles

The route begins by crossing the Seven Sisters and then heads toward Plumpton. Course surfaces include grass trails, farm tracks and woodland paths, with sections that run along the South Downs and coastal terrain. The description notes extensive views along the route.

Weather in early December can be variable, with conditions ranging from crisp sunny days to strong winds, rain, sleet, fog, freezing temperatures and snow. East Sussex and the eastern side of the South Downs are described as having probably the driest climate in the U.K., and the terrain generally drains well. Some sections can become wet and muddy but are generally runnable throughout the year.

All three distances are part of the South Downs Triple Crown. That challenge, beginning in 2025, consists of completing three ultra distance races within the calendar year and is offered in a few different variations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
