Winter on the Downs

Eastbourne, United Kingdom • 5 Dec 2025

Event overview

Winter on the Downs is a pair of single-loop trail ultras around the trails of East and West Sussex. Both races start and finish in Helen Garden, Eastbourne. Distances offered:

  • 55 miles
  • 100 miles

The route begins over Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, then heads toward Plumpton. The 55-mile course returns toward the start from that area. The 100-mile course continues out to Findon, then loops back toward Lewes and Eastbourne. The surface is a mix of grass trails, farm tracks and woodland paths.

Course details and logistics

Elevation totals are given as 7,700 ft for the 55 miles and 14,000 ft for the 100 miles. The route is described as generally runnable, with rolling hills and some longer, steeper climbs. Weather at this time of year can vary widely, including strong winds, rain, sleet, fog, freezing temperatures and snow; East Sussex is described as probably having the driest climate in the U.K., and the terrain has good drainage, though some sections can become wet and muddy.

The race start and finish are at Helen Garden, Eastbourne. There is parking in nearby streets, Eastbourne train station is about a 20 minute walk away, and toilets plus food and drink will be available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
