Ancient Trail Running in East Sussex

The Rye Ancient Trails event takes place in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This multi-terrain race follows trails that link five Norman churches across the villages of Rye, Iden, Beckley, Northiam, and Peasmarsh. The route begins on the high street of the medieval town of Rye and transitions into a landscape of historic woodland, orchards, and country lanes.

Participants can choose between two main distances:

  • 30k: This route measures slightly more than 30 km and includes approximately 1500ft of elevation gain.
  • 15k: A shorter distance following the same multi-terrain and hilly characteristics.

The course features coastal views and is supported by local marshals and community groups. Race headquarters are located at Rye Sports Centre, situated directly behind the Rye railway station for those traveling by train. On-site parking is available for individuals arriving by car.

All finishers receive a bespoke medal and access to free race photographs. Trophies and prizes are awarded to leading runners in various categories. The event has been recognized with a Bronze Badge by Racecheck and functions as a fundraising initiative for local charities, including The Oliver Curd Trust.
