Event overview

The Dark Downs is a night running event scheduled for 3 October 2026 at Plumpton Racecourse, Lewes. It comprises two looped races on the South Downs that start at dusk and run into the darkness. Distances offered include:

  • 50 km
  • Half marathon

The 50 km race forms part of a new "50k" South Downs Triple Crown, in which runners may choose any three of four 50 km races to attempt the Crown.

Course and logistics

The course follows rolling hills and runnable trails on largely untechnical terrain. The South Downs hold a Dark Sky Reserve award from 2016. The route will be fully marked with high visibility and reflective signage, and marshals will be positioned at regular intervals. Aid stations will be provided and staffed by volunteers. Runners and walkers will have 6 and 12 hours to complete the races. Entry prices are listed between £46 and £80. The event is open to entrants aged 20 and over.
