The Dark Downs
The Dark Downs comprises looped night races on the South Downs, based at Plumpton Racecourse, Lewes. The event offers trail running over rolling hills and runnable, untechnical terrain, with courses designed to be suitable for running after dusk and into darkness.
Distances include:
- 50k
- Half marathon
- 20 mile
The 50k race forms part of the South Downs 50k Triple Crown, where runners can choose three qualifying 50k events to complete the series. Runners and walkers are given set time limits to finish: options include six and twelve hour cutoffs.
The course is fully marked and uses high visibility reflective signage. Marshals are positioned at regular intervals and aid stations are supplied with volunteers to support participants on the route. Night running is highlighted as useful preparation for longer ultramarathons and for gaining experience in racing in low light conditions. The South Downs hold a Dark Sky Reserve designation, noted for clear, starry nights that can be visible during the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
