Winter on the Downs - Plumpton Racecourse, Lewes
Winter on the Downs is a set of single-loop trail races based at Plumpton Racecourse in Lewes, East Sussex. Routes run through the South Downs countryside into parts of West Sussex and use a combination of grass trails, farm tracks and woodland or chalk paths.
Distances
- 100 miles, single loop, ~12,700 ft ascent/descent
- 55 miles, single loop, ~7,000 ft ascent/descent
- 50 km, single loop, ~3,700 ft ascent/descent
All routes are fully waymarked and recorded with live GPS tracking and chip timing. Terrain is predominantly trail (about 99% trail, 1% road). Aid station provision varies by distance: the 100-mile has 12 stations, the 55-mile has 8 stations and the 50 km has 4 stations. Minimum age for entry is 20 years.
Qualification requirements differ by distance: the 100-mile and 55-mile races require a qualifying performance at prior events within the past four years, while the 50 km does not require a qualifier. Each distance is a UTMB Index race and awards ITRA points (100 miles 5 points, 55 miles 3 points, 50 km 2 points). GPX route files are available for download. Permits for the event are granted through the ARC; permit numbers are pending.
Weather at this time of year can vary widely; some sections drain well but parts may become wet or muddy. Refund, deferral and postponement policies are specified by the organiser for extreme weather and entry changes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
