UWFRA Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge
The Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge is a fundraising event organized by the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA). Now in its 13th year, the event takes place in the Wharfedale valley with all routes starting and finishing in the village of Kettlewell. All proceeds from the entries support the operational costs of the local rescue team.
Participants can choose from three distinct courses based on their preference for distance and elevation:
- 17 miles - The Three Peaks route involves 3800ft of ascent, crossing Firth Fell, Buckden Pike, and Great Whernside.
- 13.5 miles - The Two Peaks route features 2500ft of ascent, covering Buckden Pike and Great Whernside.
- 4.5 miles - The Valley Walk follows a lower-elevation path with 300ft of ascent.
The longer peak routes are open to both runners and walkers. These courses provide views over Upper Wharfedale and include water stations at Buckden village and the Tor Dike/Park Rash road crossing. The 4.5 mile family walk follows the Dalesway to Starbottom along the River Wharfe before returning to Kettlewell via the Paradise Walk.
The entry fee includes event parking, as well as refreshments such as tea, coffee, and pies or pasties. A cake stall is also available on-site. Dogs are permitted only on the valley walk and are not allowed on the peak routes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
