Waun Fach Fell Race
The Waun Fach Fell Race is a single hill race held on a classic horseshoe route in the Brecon Beacons area. The course distance is 11.2 km with 610 m of ascent (about 7 miles and 2000 ft). The route runs on defined paths, many of which have been improved with gravel or stone, and includes open ridge running and some grassy or formerly boggy sections.
The route starts by following a track and a short road section up Rhiw Trumau on 'McNamara's Road' to a col at 617. Runners then climb to Pen Trumau, continue along a broad ridge to Waun Fach, and follow improved and eroded paths to Pen Y Manllwyn. At a large cairn the course turns left and descends west along the Dragons Back (Y Grib), with a few undulations before a final climb to the old fort at the finish. Marshals are placed at obvious turns including the top and major cairns.
Event details note a headquarters at Dinas Castle Inn in Pengenffordd, Talgarth, Powys, and that drivers should not use the pub car park; parking will be signed from the pub and a separate large car park is used. The event is for over 18s, entry is priced at £12 with limited entries on the day available before 10am at £15 cash, and the race is limited to 130 runners. First aid cover and three hill marshals are provided. A maprun variant uses the same course for solo or paired efforts with automatic timing to results.
