Volcanic 50

Volcanic is a trail race on Mt. St. Helens in Washington state with two distance options that run largely on the Loowit Trail. The courses pass lava and pumice fields, large boulder fields, river crossings, blast zone terrain and dense forest. Runners encounter technical sections that include scrambling and some rope-assisted passages, and the route offers broad views of the volcano and surrounding Cascades.

  • 50K circumnavigates Mt. St. Helens on the Loowit Trail, 32 miles, ~7,400 ft gain/loss.
  • 25K follows Loowit Trail sections including boulder fields and a debris flow, ~3,300 ft gain/loss.

Both races start and finish at Marble Mountain Sno Park. The 50K has a prerequisite: completion of a prior trail 50K or a previous Volcanic 25K; registrants must provide a link to that result. The 50K also requires mandatory gear including at least 40 oz of water, a lightweight water resistant jacket, an emergency blanket and a whistle.

The event capacity is listed as 50K = 285 and 25K = 325. The site allows car camping the night before the race with specific vehicle and tent placement rules, there is no running water at the sno park, and parking is available in upper and lower lots. Travel times to Marble Mountain Sno Park are approximately two hours from Portland and four hours from Seattle. The race occurs on the traditional homelands of the Cowlitz Tribe.
