The Ruff is a trail race at Dog Mountain Trailhead in Carson, Washington, inside the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The event is a 7-mile course that is run entirely on single-track trails. Registration opens on January 1, 2026 at 12:00 AM PT.

Course

The course ascends about 3 miles with roughly 3000 ft of elevation gain to the summit via the Dog Mountain Trail, then descends about 4 miles to the finish on the Augspurger Trail. The route offers views of the Columbia River, Mt. Hood, and Mt. St. Helens.

Logistics and services

Bib pickup is available the morning of the race at the Dog Mountain Trailhead from 8:00 AM to 9:45 AM. Limited parking is noted at the trailhead. Beer is provided by Ninkasi Brewing Company and pizza by Backwoods Brewing Company. Well-behaved dogs are allowed on the course.

Awards and permits

Awards are given to the top three male and female finishers and top masters male and female. First place male and female receive a pair of Inov-8 shoes. Separate awards are given to the first male and female overall (King/Queen of the Mountain) and to the fastest male and female downhill time; an individual is eligible to win only one award. The race is held under a special use permit in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
