Backcountry Rise : Mount St. Helens, Toutle WA

Backcountry Rise is a trail running event staged at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center above Coldwater Lake in the Mt. Margaret Backcountry of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The event includes remote loop courses that traverse singletrack trails with sustained climbs, long descents and exposed ridgeline sections. The landscape includes high mountain lakes, creeks and varied alpine and blast zone terrain with frequent wildlife sightings.

Distances offered:

  • 50K, 7,600 ft gain/loss, three aid stations, prior ultra experience required
  • 20 Miler, 4,800 ft gain/loss, two aid stations
  • Half Marathon, 2,800 ft gain/loss, two aid stations

The 50K requires prior trail 50K completion or a prior Backcountry Rise 20 miler finish and specific gear. Minimum gear details in event materials include a 35 to 40 ounce fluid capacity, a lightweight jacket, emergency blanket and safety whistle. The 20 Miler and Half Marathon have smaller fluid requirements and may require additional gear if weather forecasts call for precipitation.

The Science and Learning Center provides parking, camping options, a dining hall and flush toilets but no showers. Friday evening activities at the venue include optional bib pickup, a communal meal and a trivia night. A portion of proceeds benefits the Mt. St. Helens Institute. An alternate course option may be used due to road access limitations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
