Tunnel Hill is a multi-distance ultramarathon on the Tunnel Hill State Trail in Vienna, Illinois, organized by Durbin Race Management. The event offers certified courses and will host the 2026 USATF 50 Mile Road Championships. The trail surface is crushed limestone over a dirt bed with minimal technical features, a gentle grade, one major road crossing, and an iconic tunnel that racers pass multiple times depending on distance.

Distances:

  • 100 miles
  • 100 km
  • USATF 50 Mile National Championship (50 miles)
  • 50 miles
  • Marathon

Course format: all distances start and finish at Vienna City Park and use an out-and-back loop that yields a 50-mile circuit. Marathon and 100km finishes are certified at designated turnaround points; runners may drop down to shorter official distances during the race. Time limits for 100mi, 100km, and 50mi are 30 hours; 100-mile runners must begin their second 50 in under 15 hours to remain eligible for a 100-mile finish.

Race services and rules: marked aid stations with food and hot options, limited disposable cups (participants are encouraged to carry personal containers), porta-johns at several stations, drop-bag logistics with suggested size limits, and rules on pacing, shoe compliance with IAU standards, and no caching outside aid stations. The event carries IAU and national certifications and awards prize money for records and top finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
