Tunnel Hill is a multi-distance event on the Tunnel Hill State Trail in Vienna, Illinois. Distances offered include:
- 100 mile
- 100 km
- 50 mile USATF national championship division
- 50 mile open
- Marathon
The course uses the Vienna City Park start and finish and runs south to the Henry Barkhausen Wetlands Center then north to a certified northern turnaround. One circuit equals 50 miles; the 100 mile is two circuits. The 100 km finish is at a certified turnaround about 6.06855 miles past the southern aid station. The trail surface is crushed limestone over a dirt bed and the route includes the Tunnel Hill tunnel and several trestles.
Time limits are posted for all distances; the 100 mile, 100 km, and 50 mile events have a 30 hour finish limit and 100 mile runners must begin the second 50 in under 15 hours. Aid stations provide water, Tailwind hydration, fruit, sandwiches, hot foods, and minimal cups so runners are advised to bring personal containers. Drop bag size is suggested around 10" x 10" x 18" or similar. Pacers are allowed under event rules and must sign a waiver and wear a pacer bib.
The event holds USATF sanctioning and course certifications and will host the USATF 50 mile road championships in 2026. Prize money, awards, and finisher buckles or medals are offered per distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
