The event is a multi-distance ultrarunning meeting on the Tunnel Hill State Trail in Vienna, Illinois. Distances offered include:

The course uses a rails-to-trail crushed limestone surface with gentle grades and runs from Vienna City Park south to the Wetlands Center and a northern turnaround. The 50 mile course is one loop; the 100 mile repeats that loop. A certified 100 km turnaround is located just past the first southern aid station, and the Vienna finish marks a certified marathon distance. The trail route crosses the famous tunnel multiple times depending on distance.

Certifications and labels are in place for marathon, 50 mile, 100 km, and 100 mile distances, and the 100 mile and 50 mile events carry IAU Golden Label recognition. Time limits apply: 30 hours for 100 mile, 100 km, and 50 mile events; second 50 must begin in less than 15 hours. Aid stations provide hydration, basic food items, and minimal cups; porta johns are located at several stations. Drop bags are managed at designated locations and should be kept to a modest size.
