Tunnel Hill 100 & 50 Mile Runs : Vienna, IL
The event is staged on the Tunnel Hill State Trail with start and finish at Vienna City Park. Distances offered include:
- 100 Mile
- 100 km
- USATF 50 Mile National Championship
- 50 Mile
- **Marathon
The course runs south from Vienna to the Henry Barkhausen Wetlands Center at 13.1094 miles, then north 25 miles to the northern turnaround and back to the finish. The 50 mile distance is one loop; the 100 mile repeats that loop. A certified 100km turnaround is located about a mile past the first southern aid station. When runners return from the south to Vienna they cross a certified marathon distance.
The trail surface is finely crushed limestone over a dirt bed and is described as smooth with minimal technical sections. The famous tunnel is crossed twice by 50 km and 50 mile runners and four times by 100 mile runners. USATF and World Athletics course certifications are in place. Time limits for the 100 mile, 100 km, and 50 mile are 30 hours; 100 mile runners must begin their second 50 miles in under 15 hours.
Aid stations provide standard runner fare including hydration drink, fruit, hot foods later in the day, and limited cups; athletes are encouraged to carry their own containers. Porta johns are present at every aid station and some stations offer running water. Drop bags have recommended size guidelines and will be transported to aid locations. Pacers are permitted under specified rules and USADA drug testing protocols apply to the USATF championship division.
The event features entrant items and finisher awards including hoodies, bags, and buckles or medals. Registration closes October 30 and some distances have limited entry. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
