Tunnel Hill 100 & 50 Mile Runs : Vienna, IL

Tunnel Hill is a multi-distance ultrarunning event held on the Tunnel Hill State Trail with certified road and trail course measurements. Distances offered include:

  • 100 Miler
  • 100 km
  • USATF 50 Mile National Championship
  • 50 Miler
  • Marathon

The course starts and finishes at Vienna City Park and follows a crushed limestone rail-trail with a gentle grade of about 2 percent. The 50 mile course runs south to the Wetlands Center at 13.1094 miles, then north 25 miles to a northern turnaround and back 11.8906 miles to the finish to complete 50 miles. The 100 is two repeats of that loop. The 100km continues to a certified turnaround about 6.06855 miles south for a 100km finish. The tunnel is traversed twice by 50 km and 50 mile runners and four times by 100 mile runners.

Time limits are strict: 30 hours for the 100, 100km, and 50 mile races, and 100 milers must begin the second 50 in under 15 hours. Aid stations provide drinks, Tailwind hydration, basic foods, and hot options later in the day; cups are limited so runners are advised to have their own fluid container. Pacers are allowed under specific rules. The USATF 50 Mile championship requires USATF membership and US citizenship for championship eligibility and is subject to anti-doping rules. Shoe rules follow IAU standards for sole thickness and plate count. Multiple national and world records have been set on this course in past years.
