Tunnel Hill 100 and associated races
Tunnel Hill is an annual multi-distance ultramarathon held on the Tunnel Hill State Trail in Vienna, IL. The event uses a crushed limestone rails-to-trail surface, includes an iconic tunnel and several trestles, and has an elevation range from about 340 ft to 680 ft with a gentle 2 percent grade. The course is certified by USATF and World Athletics, and the 100 mile and 50 mile races carry IAU Golden Label recognition.
Distances offered include:
- 100 Miler
- 100 km
- 50 Miler (USATF 50 Mile National Championship division)
- Marathon
All distances start and finish at Vienna City Park on the same certified course layout. Runners have a 30 hour limit for the 100 mi, 100 km, and 50 mi; 100 mile entrants must begin their second 50 in less than 15 hours. The 100 km and 50 milers pass through the tunnel twice; 100 milers pass through four times.
Aid stations provide water, hydration drink, food options from sandwiches to soup, and limited cups so runners are encouraged to bring personal containers. Drop bags are handled at designated locations and are recommended to be about 10" x 10" x 18" or smaller. Pacers are allowed under event rules with specific timing restrictions. Live tracking and official results are provided for participants and followers.
Five world records and several national and course records have been set at Tunnel Hill, and the event includes prize structures and awards for top finishers and record performances. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
