Tunnel Hill 100 & 50 Mile Runs : Vienna, IL

Tunnel Hill is a multi-distance ultramarathon on the Tunnel Hill State Trail with USATF, World Athletics, and IAU certifications and label designations. Distances offered include:

  • 100 Miler
  • 100 km
  • USATF 50 Mile National Championship / 50 Miler
  • Marathon

The course starts and finishes at Vienna City Park and follows the rail-trail south to the Wetlands Center (13.1094 miles) then north 25 miles to a northern turnaround and back to Vienna to complete a 50 mile loop. The 100 repeats that loop. The certified 100km turnaround lies about 6.06855 miles past the first southern aid station. Fifty milers and 100km runners pass through the tunnel twice; 100 milers pass four times.

Time limits and cutoffs are firm: 30 hours for the 100, 100km, and 50, and 100 milers must begin the second 50 in under 15 hours. Championship entrants must meet USATF eligibility rules for awards and are subject to drug testing protocols. Shoes must comply with IAU limits for sole thickness and plate configuration.

Aid stations supply water, Tailwind, fruit, snacks, sandwiches, hot food later in the day, and very limited cups so runners should bring personal containers. Drop bags are managed at designated locations; a suggested size is about 10 x 10 x 18 inches. Prize money and finisher items are awarded per distance, and live tracking and official results are provided for the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
