The Last Boyscout
The Last Boyscout is a backyard ultra marathon held at Ferne Clyffe State Park in Goreville, Illinois. Following the format of the Big Backyard Ultra, participants must complete a 4.167 mile loop every hour. Any runner not in the starting corral at the beginning of the next hour is eliminated. This process continues until only one participant remains to finish a final solo loop.
The event utilizes two distinct courses. The Day Loop features a mix of single-track trails, jeep roads, and approximately one mile of paved road. It includes approximately 600 feet of elevation gain per loop and contains some technical sections, including the steep Boyscout Trail. The Night Loop begins twelve hours into the event and follows an out-and-back route that is 75% paved. Depending on recent rainfall, both courses may include two creek crossings.
The start and finish area is located at the Hillside pavilion, which serves as the primary aid station. The race provides water, ice, and food, including hot options as the event progresses. Facilities at this location include pit toilets and portable toilets.
Registration is limited to 75 participants. All runners receive a shirt and memorabilia. The venue at Ferne Clyffe State Park offers both electric and primitive campgrounds for those staying on-site. The park is situated between Interstate 57 and Interstate 24 in Southern Illinois. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
