The Last Boyscout : Ferne Clyffe State Park
The Last Boyscout is a last person standing race held on the Boyscout Trail at Ferne Clyffe State Park in Goreville, Illinois. The event uses repeated loops of 4.167 mile laps; each loop contains about 600 feet of climbing.
The course has a daytime loop and a night route. The daytime loop mixes single track trail, jeep road, and a little over one mile on paved road. It is described as fully runnable with a few mildly technical sections and two notable hills, the steepest being the Boyscout Trail. The night route is an out and back with north and south turnarounds, runs from and returns to the start and finish area, and is approximately 75 percent paved road. Night runners are required to wear a headlamp and a reflective vest.
The start and finish area is the Hillside pavilion, which serves as the only aid station on course. That pavilion provides water, ice, food, and hot food later in the event. Runners should be prepared to be largely self sufficient. Pit toilets are available at the start and finish area and within the first quarter mile of each loop; porta toilets are also provided.
The format is inspired by the original last person standing race Big Backyard Ultra and follows the same rules. Registration is capped at 75 entrants. Participants receive a shirt and event memorabilia. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
