Shawnee Hills Trail Races
Shawnee Hills Trail Races are based at Camp Ondessonk in Ozark, Illinois, inside the Shawnee National Forest. The route passes sandstone canyon systems, notable rock formations, and waterfalls including Pakentuck Falls, Jackson Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and Cedar Falls, with views from Salomon's Ridge. Vegetation is primarily oak-hickory, maple-beech, and pine forest.
The course is a figure eight loop composed of about 80% single track on dirt with some fire roads. Terrain is hilly and technical with rocks, roots, ruts, creek crossings, and significant cumulative climb (roughly 2,500 to 7,500 feet over a 50 mile measure). Runners may encounter heat and humidity and local wildlife such as snakes, ground hornets, and bees.
Distances offered:
- 100 Mile - 1 short 3 mile loop then three 32 mile loops
- 100K - two 32 mile loops
- 50K - one 32 mile loop
- Night 50K - 50K run held at night
- Half Marathon - roughly 13 miles on the west section of the loop
There are five manned aid stations stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, snacks and first aid, roughly 5 miles apart with no segment greater than about 8 miles. Restrooms are provided at the start/finish and several aid stations. Registered runners receive a custom event shirt; shirt order deadline is August 10, 2026. Finisher awards include custom belt buckles for the 100 mile and 100K and medals for the 50K and half marathon. Lodging includes on site tree houses for runner plus one, with modest additional fees for extra occupants and tents. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
