Rocky Ledges 5K/10K Trail Run/Walk

SIU Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center presents the ninth year of the Rocky Ledges 5K/10K Trail Run/Walk on September 12, 2026 at the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center in Makanda, Illinois. The event is held on the center's trail system and event maps are provided.

Distances offered:

  • 5K Trail Run/Walk, 3.1 miles
  • 10K Trail Run/Walk, 6.2 miles

The event is open to individuals and teams of all ages. A trail race safety talk will take place on Freeberg Patio before each race. All participants receive a medal at the finish line.

Registration is handled in two periods noted in the event information. For the 5K, registration prior to September 10 is $30.00 for ages 18 and older and $25.00 for ages 17 and under; registration on September 10 is $35.00 for ages 18 and older and $30.00 for ages 17 and under. For the 10K, registration prior to September 10 is $35.00 for ages 18 and older and $30.00 for ages 17 and under; registration on September 10 is $40.00 for ages 18 and older and $35.00 for ages 17 and under.

Competition divisions are offered for Male, Female, and Non-Binary/Other. 5K age divisions start at 8 and under and progress through 70 plus. 10K age divisions begin at 12–15 and progress through 70 plus. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.

A team-focused 5K cross country race behind the Carterville Community Center on July 17, 2026, with grass, gravel, and paved sections. Teams compete by standard XC scoring and medals and team awards are presented.

A 3 person cross country relay on July 31, 2026 at the Osage XC course in Cape Girardeau. Teams run three 1 mile legs and use a bring your own baton format for creative handoffs.

Trail races at Camp Ondessonk in the Shawnee National Forest offering 100 mile, 100K, 50K, night 50K and a half marathon over rugged, scenic single track with multiple waterfalls and staffed aid stations.

A last person standing loop race at Ferne Clyffe State Park with 4.167 mile loops and about 600 feet of climbing per loop. Night laps require a headlamp and reflective vest and registration is capped at 75.
