High Sierra Alpine Running

The Thunder Mountain Trail Challenge is a scenic alpine running event held in the High Sierra of Northern California. The course takes participants through the wilderness of the Lake Tahoe Basin, reaching elevations of 7,400 feet above sea level. This event features high-altitude terrain with approximately 7,500 feet of total elevation gain for the longest distance.

Participants navigate loops across the Sierra wilderness, starting from fire roads near the Horse Canyon Trailhead off Highway 88. The course includes sections of alpine trails and vistas near the base of Thunder Mountain. Due to the high-elevation environment, participants may encounter varied weather conditions including high sun exposure, wind, or sudden mountain storms.

Available event distances include:

  • 5.6M
  • 10.5M
  • 21M
  • 50K

The 50K race follows a three-loop format centered around the Horse Canyon Trail Junction. There are two primary aid stations located at the Start/Finish line and the Thunder Mountain Trail Head, along with a water stop. Supporters and crews can access both main aid stations. Running poles are permitted during the event, and participants in the longest distance may utilize pacers for their final loop after reaching mile 20. The event has a total capacity limit of 100 runners across all distances. Finisher medals are awarded to all participants who complete their respective courses.
