Kit Carson, United States • 8 Aug 2026

Event Overview

The Thunder Mountain Trail Challenge offers four trail running distances: 5.6 miles, 10.5 miles, 21 miles, and 50K. The event takes place on alpine trails in the High Sierra near the Lake Tahoe Basin. The start and finish location is the Horse Canyon Trail Junction.

Course Details

The course consists of loops run at approximately 7,400 feet above sea level. The 50K distance involves about 7,500 feet of total elevation gain. The course includes fire roads and trails with two road crossings that require runner caution, as traffic will not be stopped. A long section of 7.4 miles on each loop has no aid station support. There are two primary aid stations: the Start/Finish Line Aid Station and the Thunder Mountain Trail Head Aid Station. Crews can support runners at both locations.

Race Logistics

Registration is limited to 100 runners. Race-day registration is available at an increased fee. Active military and first responders receive a 15% discount upon request. Registration fees are non-refundable but may be transferable to a future event if arranged at least 24 hours prior. Pacers are allowed to join 50K runners for their final loop starting at mile 20. Race poles are permitted.

Participant Information

The event is held in high alpine terrain. Participants are advised to prepare for variable summer weather, including potential heat, sun exposure, cold, wind, and mosquitoes. Cell phone reception may not be available on course. All finishers receive a commemorative medal. Drop bags can be held at the Start/Finish Aid Station.
