Event Overview
Through the Darkness is an endurance event held at Dartmoor National Park that focuses on resilience and mental health awareness. The event is organized by the North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team, a volunteer charity providing search and rescue services across Devon and Cornwall. All proceeds from the event support the charity's operations.
The event takes place on a 12 km circular route with 305 m of elevation per lap. The course features a mix of gravel trails and tarmac tracks. Participants have a 12-hour window to complete as many laps as possible by running, jogging, or walking.
Participation Options
The event is open to both individual participants and teams:
- Solo Runners: Individuals attempt to complete as many laps as possible over 12 hours. They may take breaks and resume the race at any time.
- Teams: Team members participate in a relay format where only one member is on the course at a time. Each member must complete at least one lap.
Location and Facilities
The event is based at Okehampton Army Camp, which is accessible via Okehampton train station. Basic camping facilities are included in the entry fee, allowing for tents or campervans. These facilities include toilets and showers but do not offer electricity or kitchen services. There is a vehicle parking charge for those not arriving by alternative transport.
Mandatory Equipment

- A head torch with at least 250 lumens and spare batteries
- A waterproof jacket with taped seams and a long-sleeved baselayer
- A survival bag and a whistle
- A mobile phone and an electronic device with the GPX route preloaded
- Minimum food reserve of 500 kcal and 500 ml water capacity
