Dartmoor Prison Break

Dartmoor Prison Break is a timed outdoor distance event starting from HMP Dartmoor. Participants choose their own route and aim to achieve the furthest straight-line distance on foot within a fixed time limit.

There are three timed categories:

  • 6 hours Absconder 18 years or older
  • 12 hours Delinquent 18 years or older
  • 24 hours Felon 18 years or older

Routes must use public rights of way only. Event wardens will patrol the area and may attempt to locate participants. All entrants are monitored for the full duration by a GPS tracker device and friends and family can view individual progress. Medals are given to all finishers.

A mandatory kit list is enforced and will be checked before the event. Required equipment includes a waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers with taped seams, a head torch with spare batteries or power supply, a mobile phone, compass and maps or digital mapping, a whistle, drinking water, hat and gloves, a spare long sleeve base layer, emergency food, an emergency foil blanket and a first aid kit. A pre-event equipment check is mandatory.

Entries open 1 October 2025 and close 15 May 2026. Entry fees are £45 for the 6 hour category, £55 for the 12 hour category and £65 for the 24 hour category. The event is organised by Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.

Trail runs nearby

Three trail races at the Flete Estate in Mothecombe, South Devon, using private tracks, estuary footpaths and coastal path sections. Distances range from about 8.5 miles to 28.5 miles with marked courses, aid stations and compulsory kit req..

Trail races at Roadford Lake with 10.5K and 5K laps, a half marathon on two laps, plus 1K and 2K kids races; adults may accompany children at no extra charge.

A fell running event at Meldon Reservoir featuring a five mile senior race climbing 1,362 ft to High Willhays and return, plus junior races over 2 km and 4 km. The course requires self navigation and includes compulsory checkpoints.

Langstone Fell Race runs from Peter Tavy across Coombe Tor, Cox Tor and the Langstone over roughly 10 km, with 2k and 5k options and junior races; parking, toilets and post-race refreshments are provided.
