Dartmoor Prison Break takes place from 30 to 31 May 2026 at HMP Dartmoor. The event is organised by the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team. Entries open 1 October 2025 and close 15 May 2026. Entry numbers listed are 27 participants at the time of the listing. The minimum age is 18 or older. Medals are awarded to all escapees.

Format, categories and rules

Participants choose their own route from HMP Dartmoor and aim to achieve the furthest distance, measured as the crow flies, within a set time. Routes must use public rights of way only; tunnelling or using gliders is not permitted. All participants are tracked by a GPS device for the full duration and family or friends can monitor individual progress. There is a mandatory pre-event equipment check.

Courses and entry fees:

  • 6 hour Absconder - £45.00
  • 12 hour Delinquent - £55.00
  • 24 hour Felon - £65.00

Mandatory kit includes waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, head torch with spare power, mobile phone, compass and maps or digital mapping, whistle, water, hat, gloves, spare base layer, emergency food, emergency foil blanket, and a first aid kit.
