Dartmoor Prison Break

Dartmoor Prison Break is an outdoor endurance event based at HMP Dartmoor. Participants aim to achieve the furthest straight-line distance on foot in a set time while choosing their own route. Routes must use only public rights of way.

There are three timed categories: a 6 hour Absconder, a 12 hour Delinquent and a 24 hour Felon. All entrants must be 18 years or older. All participants are monitored for the full duration by a GPS tracker so individual progress can be followed by friends and family. Wardens will patrol the area during the event.

Entry fees are set by category: 6 hour £45, 12 hour £55, 24 hour £65. Entries open on 1 October 2025 and close on 15 May 2026. Medals are awarded to all escapees.

A mandatory kit list is enforced and there will be a pre-event equipment check. Required kit includes waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, head torch with spare batteries, mobile phone, compass and maps or digital mapping, whistle, water containers, hat, gloves, spare base layer, emergency food, emergency foil blanket and a first aid kit.

The event is organised by the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team and has attracted participants from across the UK in previous years. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
