Cosdon Hill Race

Hosted by the Okehampton Running Club, the Cosdon Hill Race is a short but significant fell running event in the village of Belstone. The course covers a distance of 3.1 miles (5 km) and includes 300m of total ascent. The event typically takes place alongside the village fete, providing a community atmosphere with refreshments available at the finish line on the village green.

The course begins with a fast, steep downhill section leading to a narrow footbridge. After crossing, participants face a sharp climb through gorse bushes to reach the open moorland. The terrain on the moor consists of long grass, hummocks, and heather, which may require following sheep trods to maintain pace. Runners navigate toward the summit cairns before beginning a rapid descent.

The route is largely unmarked, though marshals are positioned at specific points to assist with navigation. On the return toward the village, participants can choose between a water crossing through a ford or using the narrow footbridge. The final stretch involves a 150ft climb back to the finish line.
