Three Peaks Race
The Three Peaks Race is a long-standing fell running event based in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, often referred to as the "Marathon with Mountains." Established in 1954, the event has a significant history in the sport and is now recognized as a UTMB Index Race and part of the World Mountain Running Ranking. The race requires specific entry qualifications and adherence to strict mountain safety rules.
Participants can choose from several race formats:
- Main Race: A mountain course requiring previous qualification and the ability to meet specific cut-off times.
- Relay Race: A competition for teams of six runners compete in pairs over three legs. The course follows the same route as the main race, with transition points at Ribblehead and Chapel-le-Dale.
- Junior Races: Fell races organized for younger runners, typically held in conjunction with the main event weekend.
The relay event consists of three distinct segments. Leg 1 covers 19.4 km with 660 m of ascent via the Pen-y-ghent summit. Leg 2 involves an 8.4 km stretch with 470 m of ascent over Whernside. The final segment, Leg 3, covers 11.2 km with 466 m of climbing via Ingleborough.
The event provides mini-bus transport for relay teams between the leg changeover points. A portion of every entry fee is donated to the Friends of the Three Peaks to support the protection and enhancement of the local landscape. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
