Event Overview
The Yomp Mountain Challenge is a multi-day event featuring six different courses. The 2026 edition is the 41st running of the event. All events start and finish at Basecamp, located at The Engine Shed in Kirkby Stephen.
Courses
The event includes several distinct courses spread over three days. On Saturday, June 13, 2026, there are four primary running events:
- ThruDark 65k Ultra Yomp: A 44-mile (approximately 70 km) route over Wild Boar Fell, through the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Mallerstang valley, joining the Pennine Way and Coast-to-Coast route.
- ThruDark Yomp Mountain Marathon: A 26-mile route around the Upper Eden Valley, taking in Wild Boar, Mallerstang Edge, Tailbrigg, and Nine Standards.
- JT Atkinsons 20k Yomp: A 20 km route through Wharton Hall, ascending High Pike, over Tailbrigg to Nine Standards, then following parts of the Coast-to-Coast route back.
- Aldersons 10k Yomp: An 11.2 km route taking in Wharton Hall, Nateby, Birkett Fell, Ladthwaite, and the Viaduct Walk.
Other weekend events include a Friday night Sunset Stroll (a 10k guided jog/walk) and a Sunday 5k family-friendly route.
Event Details
For the Saturday events, entries on the day are available for the 10k and 20k courses only. Competitors in the Ultra, Mountain Marathon, and 20k events will be provided with GPS trackers for safety. Post-race hot meals are provided for competitors by sponsors. The event weekend features live music, catering, retail, and a bar. Camping is available on-site.
Age Limits
Age limits are relative to the event date (June 13, 2026):
- Ultra & Mountain Marathon: 18 years or older.
- 20k Yomp: 16 years or older.
- 10k Yomp: 5 years or older (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).
