The Yomp Mountain Challenge

The Yomp Mountain Challenge is a volunteer run, three day mountain event held in June in and around Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. The event was first run in 1983 and raises funds for local charities; to date well over £110,000 has been donated. In 2025, £10,000 was shared among several local causes.

A range of routes is offered across the weekend, allowing participants to choose a distance that fits their plans:

• Ultra ThruDark ULTRA Yomp

Basecamp is at The Engine Shed, Pennine View Park, Kirkby Stephen. The event village includes food vendors, a beer tent, family activities, live music and support from sponsors. Camping and campervans are welcome on site and nearby hostel and B and B options are within walking distance.

An additional activity for the event is the Podgill Plunge abseil, a 25 metre descent from Podgill Viaduct. Participants for the abseil must be 18 or older and physically able to take part.
