The Yomp Mountain Challenge

The Yomp Mountain Challenge is an established multi-distance event held in the Upper Eden Valley of East Cumbria. Centered at a basecamp in Kirkby Stephen, the Saturday portion of the event, known as Super Saturday, offers four distinct courses across the local fells and hills. The event routes traverse landmarks such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Mallerstang valley.

Participants can choose from the following distances:

  • 65 km Ultra Yomp (18 years and over)
  • Mountain Marathon (18 years and over)
  • 20 km Yomp (16 years and over)
  • 11.2 km (10k) Yomp (5 years and over)

The 65 km Ultra Yomp covers approximately 44 miles, passing Wild Boar Fell and Great Shunner Fell while utilizing sections of the Pennine Way and Coast-to-Coast routes. The course includes three feed stations and GPS tracking for all entrants. The Mountain Marathon is a 26-mile route featuring Wild Boar and Mallerstang Edge, following the original event path with two feed stations.

The 20 km and 11.2 km courses are open to both runners and walkers. These routes pass through Wharton Hall and Nateby, with the 20 km distance reaching High Pike and Nine Standards. All Saturday participants are offered a hot meal at the Kirkby Stephen basecamp following their event. The basecamp facility at the Engine Shed also features live music, retail stands, and catering throughout the weekend. Camping is available on-site at Pennine View Park.
