The Yomp Mountain Challenge

The Yomp Mountain Challenge is a volunteer run, three day mountain event held in June in and around Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria. The event was first run in 1983 and raises funds for local charities; to date well over £110,000 has been donated. In 2025, £10,000 was shared among several local causes.

A range of routes is offered across the weekend, allowing participants to choose a distance that fits their plans:

Basecamp is at The Engine Shed, Pennine View Park, Kirkby Stephen. The event village includes food vendors, a beer tent, family activities, live music and support from sponsors. Camping and campervans are welcome on site and nearby hostel and B and B options are within walking distance.

An additional activity for the event is the Podgill Plunge abseil, a 25 metre descent from Podgill Viaduct. Participants for the abseil must be 18 or older and physically able to take part. Trail runs nearby

Trail runs at Grizedale Forest on 8 February 2026 feature fully marked, chip timed courses on wide forest paths. Choose a 10K with 260 m ascent or a 6K with 150 m ascent; two dogs per runner are permitted on a suitable harness.

Tackle a challenging 2 mile fell race in scenic Barbondale, Lake District on Sun 8 Feb 2026, with 358 m of climb over flagged terrain. Part of the Helm Hill Winter League, pre entry or pay on the day; parking is very limited.

A community fell race from Dufton Village Green to High Cup Nick and back, about 15 km with roughly 450 m of ascent. The event raises funds for Dufton Village Hall and includes post-race soup and a roll.

A fully flagged fell race at Cautley on 1 March 2026, about 6.5 km with 663 m of ascent. Pre-entry is available, mandatory waterproof kit is required and dogs are not permitted.
